Meet Our Director of Music
Josh Whiteneck has been with St. Benedict Church since Advent 2014. Josh comes to us after working in the airlines for almost 10 years as a flight attendant.
Josh began playing in church at the young age of 10 after learning basics from his Grandmother, and taking piano lessons with a local church pianist. The pianist told his parents she taught him everything she knew, and he needed more formal lessons. That unfortunately didnt happen until his family left South Carolina and returned to Florida, where Josh was born. In high-school, Josh began taking organ lessons from the organist in a local Episcopal Church, and Josh flourished. Josh was offered his first paid position at another local Episcopal Church, and part of his renumeration, it was set up for him to take private organ lessons with Willis Bodine, Professor of Music (retired 2003), at the University of Florida. Josh grew leaps and bounds during that year of organ lessons. Unfortunately, it came time for Josh to graduate highschool, and enter college. Josh attended Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon, GA to continue his musical studies. Josh was the only organ major at the time. Unfortunately, Josh was unable to adapt to living away from home, and left school after 1 semester. Josh then worked in local retail positions, and commenced private lessons. After a while of being home, Josh became bored, and started soul searching. Josh started working for a cruiseline, and after a year of being on the water, he started itching for something else. Josh became a Flight Attendant. Josh loved flying, but after almost 10 years, he was burned out. Throughout the 10 years of flying, Josh held a variety of church organist positions. One of his last posts before ended his flying career was at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Crystal River, FL. It was at that post he became aquainted with the staff at St. Benedict Catholic Church. Because of airline scheduling issues, Josh had to end his position with St. Anne’s, which was all too common, because of the airline. A few months afterwards, Josh subbed at St. Benedict (Divine Mercy Sunday), as the previous Director of Music was out of town on an audition. The position became available, and Josh interviewed. Out of a handful of people, Josh and another person became the top two choices of the church. Unfortunately, Josh wasnt accepted at the time. A couple of months later, Josh received a call from the Contemporary Music Director asking if he was still interested in the position. Josh anxiously accepted after taking a week to discern. Josh left his job with the airline, and has been happily working at St. Benedict since! He is very gracious to the parishioners and staff for making him feel right at home and welcomed. In fact, Josh converted and became Roman Catholic in the Summer of 2019.
Another interesting fact, Josh is the webmaster of this website!
